How long for nervous system to heal
Please be careful of your hands or feet, especially around hot or sharp objects. Similarly, before the motor nerves recover your hand or limb may not be able to move normally or may develop abnormal postures. Hand therapy or physiotherapy will allow movement to be maintained while the nerve cells regenerate.
As your nerve recovers, the area the nerve supplies may feel quite unpleasant and tingly. This may be accompanied by an electric shock sensation at the level of the growing nerve fibres; the location of this sensation should move as the nerve heals and grows. Over time, these feelings subside and the area should begin to feel more normal.
Unfortunately, nerves never recover completely after they have been cut. I use a microscope or magnifying glasses loupes to repair your cut nerve with sutures finer than a human hair.
This type of nerve repair surgery has the best recovery rates. Whether or not I can perform direct nerve repair on your injured limb depends on the injury your nerve has suffered. Sometimes I cannot directly repair your nerve ends, for example, if there is a piece of nerve missing or a delay in repair. With nerve grafting, I take a length of nerve from somewhere else in your body and place it as a graft. I perform this repair using a microscope, too.
You will have a scar from the surgery and often a numb patch in the area I took the nerve graft from. Possible donor nerves include sensory nerves of skin of the forearm and leg. As you breathe in, your heart-rate speeds up a little. As you breathe out, it slows down a little. The higher your vagal tone, the greater the difference between your inhalation heart-rate and your exhalation heart-rate.
The higher the tone, the more efficient you are at relaxing. Higher vagal tone is associated with better general health. It leads to better blood sugar regulation, reduced risk of stroke and cardiovascular disease, improved digestion and a reduction in migraines.
Most importantly, it is associated with increased emotional stability, resiliency and longevity. Lower vagal tone is associated with mood instability, depression, diabetes, chronic fatigue syndrome, cognitive impairment, chronic inflammation, and cardiovascular disease. Splashing cold water on your face, or taking a cold shower, stimulates the dive reflex, which is associated with stimulating the vagus nerve.
You can also achieve the same effect by holding a ziplock bag filled with ice cubes against your face and holding your breath. Or submerge your tongue in cold liquid.
Valsalva Maneuver: Exhale against a closed airway by keeping your mouth closed and pinching your nose while trying to breathe out. It increases the pressure inside of your chest cavity thereby stimulating your vagus nerve. Laugh out loud! He believes it was this perspective that enabled him to interpret the results of an accidental experiment in a new way.
After months puzzling over this, he finally hit upon the idea that the brain might be using the nervous system — specifically the vagus nerve — to tell the spleen to switch off inflammation everywhere. It was an extraordinary idea — if Tracey was right, inflammation in body tissues was being directly regulated by the brain.
Now Tracey was apparently discovering that the two systems were intricately linked. The first critical test of this exciting hypothesis was to cut the vagus nerve. When Tracey and his team did, injecting the anti-inflammatory drug into the brain no longer had an effect on the rest of the body. The second test was to stimulate the nerve without any drug in the system.
It is made of thousands and thousands of fibers and 80 per cent of them are sensory, meaning that the vagus nerve reports back to your brain what is going on in your organs. Not all vagus nerves are the same, however: some people have stronger vagus activity, which means their bodies can relax faster after a stress.
The strength of your vagus response is known as your vagal tone and it can be determined by using an electrocardiogram to measure heart rate. Every time you breathe in, your heart beats faster in order to speed the flow of oxygenated blood around your body. Breathe out and your heart rate slows. Louise Hay has written a lot about this. Astragulus and other adaptogens are generally better taken when combined in a formula and not as a single herb. When herbs are paired together, they create greater synergistic effects which enhance the ultimate power for the herb itself. Supplements are taken between times a day for optimal results. Wow, I did not realize that there was so much you could do to help your nervous system recover. Although, I do have to admit that some of them I would not have expected like staying hydrated and getting enough sleep.
But, if it really can help keep your nervous system in good shape then I can understand why it might be worth it. Thank you for this! I wish I had known all this while I was working so many hours, buring the candle at both ends! The Chalkboard Editorial Team. Jodi
